THE MAGIC OF ISMAT’S EFFORTS!
Ismat’s
parents had chalked out a number of daily chores for her. She absolutely hated
doing them as she had to get up early to do them. Blow off the husk that birds
had left behind in the bowl on the balcony – top up the bowl – scrub the water
bowl – fill it up – brush the family dog – wash its paws.
A week
later she woke up to a funny smell filling up her room. Groggily, she felt
around he her bed to find her dog Gulo snoring next to her. Its fur was rough,
greasy, and it had shed them all over the room and the bed. Greasy fur, muddy
paw prints and a chewing gum stuck in its paw were the source of the stink.
Guiltily,
Ismat stretched and yawned, and her dog perked up and began to lick her face.
She gently pushed it away. As she did so, she was struck by how silent the
morning was. She stepped out onto the balcony. The bowls were empty, except for
brown husk. Flowers blooming, green leaves stretched from floor to ceiling, yet
there were no birds, no happy chirping. Her mother walked up behind her and
said, “Do you know what’s missing, Ismat? The magic of your effort.”
Ismat
understood the import of her mother’s words. She gave her mother a tight hug
and said, “Don’t worry, Mum. I will bring the birds back. And this stinking
fleabag will be clean too! I love Gulo.”
That morning saw Ismat and parents working together on the balcony. Gulo, of course, kept wagging its tail and getting in the way of all the work, causing much confusion. Finally, Ismat’s father grabbed it and took it for aa much-needed bath.
