A.3 Introduction

a. How many videos did Kunal watch on the Internet? Name the videos. What happened as Kunal watched each video?

Kunal watched three videos on the Internet. He watched a video of cartoon ninjas, another video of a volcano spewing lava and then next video of a baby playing with a dog. As Kunal watched each video, his face came closer and closer to the screen and suddenly he was sucked into the Internet.

b. ”Don’t watch for too long or you’ll get pulled in” Mummy warned him. What did Mummy mean by pulled in?

As Mummy warned him and ‘you’ll get pulled in’, she meant to say that the Internet will suck Kunal into it, i.e., he will become addicted to it.

c. Kunal was sucked into the Internet. How did he get into the Internet and how will he get out? Discuss the possibilities.

Kunal was sucked into the Internet. This happened while he was watching movies one after another and his face was getting closer and closer. That is to say, he was getting addicted to it. Hence, to get out of this addiction, he could simply minimise watching videos or get help from his mother to get out of it.

A.4 From the text

a. Where were the trains rushing off to? What were the trains carrying?

The trains are rushing off to different parts of the Internet. The trains were carrying data in every direction.

b. Can you differentiate between the two kinds of data transfer-packet switching and circuit switching?

Packet Switching:

In this the data is broken into a few thousand pieces. Then all the bits are sent by different paths and put back together later.

Circuit Switching:

In this the data that is sent all together. It is a lot less efficient.

c. Why was Kunal encrypted?

Encryption is method of securing data by means of secret code. Kunal was encrypted so that nobody else could grab him on the way and he reaches home safely.

d. Why did TCP aunty refer to Kunal as very sensitive data?

TCP aunty referred to Kunal as very sensitive data because he was young and new to Internet. He could easily be lost or manipulated on the way.

Ex. A.7 (Page: 68)

a.         TCP handed Kunal a hat and silly glasses with a nose and a moustache attached.

b.         Kunal saw a woman on the platform. She looked very busy directing the trains.

c.          Kunal landed on a platform in a strange train station. All around him, trains whooshed in and out throughout tunnels.

d.         TCP opened up a chat window in the air and quickly explained everything to Kunal’s mother.

e.         Kunal was sucked into the Internet.

f.          TCP opened a big book with DNA written on the cover.

g.         Kunal was back home. ❶❷

h.         Kunal asked Kunal asked the lady her name. She replied that she was TCP.

i.          Kunal asked TCP if she could help him get back home.

j.          Kunal was moving fast, very fast. His arms and legs tingled. ❶❶

k.         Kunal was watching videos on his mother phone.

l.          With each video, Kunal’s face came closer and closer to the screen.

Ex. A.8 (Page:69)

“TCP Aunty, if all the devices on the Internet are connected, can you help me get back home?”

“Of course!” TCP said. She looked Kunal up and down.

“We’ll send you by packet switching. First, we’ll break you into a few thousand pieces. Then we’ll send all your bits by different paths and put you back together later.”

“No!” Kunal said, hurriedly. “Is… Isn’t there another way?”

“Hmmm”, TCP frowned. “Sending you all together by circuit switching is a lot less efficient. But if you insist. Now let’s ask you mother for your address.”

“But I know my address,” Kunal said, confused.

a.         Kunal was eager to go home. Why?

ii. He was lost and afraid.

b.         Kunal said ‘no’ to TCP’s initial proposal hurriedly. This shows that he

Iii. was afraid of the method suggested by TCP.

c.          TCP suggested the packet switching method before telling Kunal about the circuit switching method that would send him home all in one piece. This shows that

            i. TCP valued efficiency over other concern.

d.         When TCP told Kunal that it would need to ask Kunal’s mother for the address, which address was she talking about?

            ii. Kunal’s Internet address.

e.         “Is… Isn’t there another way?” Ellipsis points are periods in groups of three. It is used for different purposes. What does the ellipsis indicate here?

            ii. a pause for thought

Ex. A.9 Choose the following. (Page:70)

a.         Which of these videos did Kunal watch on his mother’s phone as mentioned in the beginning of the story?

            i. cartoon ninjas.

b.         Which of these words describes TCP best in your opinion?

            ii. Efficient.

c.          Which of these things were NOT a part of Kunal’s disguise?

iii. a pair of big black shoes and a green hat.

A. 10 Answer the following questions

a. Kunal loved Internet. Give evidence from the story to support the statement.

Kunal loved the Internet. He was always asking Mummy for her phone so he could watch videos. So much so that, we hear his Mummy warned him not to watch for too long or he would get pulled in, addicted to it.

b. Describe the scene that Kunal saw when he landed on a platform in a strange train station.

When Kunal landed on a platform in a strange train station, he saw all around him, trains whooshed in and out through tunnels. A sign popped up above him which read ‘Core Router’.

c. Why did TCP need to talk to Kunal’s mother?

Kunal was lost and asked TCP to help him get back to his home. TCP in the process needed to talk to his mother for Kunal’s Internet address and explain everything to her, how she was going to send Kunal back home.

d. Why did TCP put Kunal a disguise? Which term did she use for the disguise?

TCP gave Kunal a disguise because he was young and wanted to save him from being grabbed by anyone. In disguise, she handed Kunal a hat and silly glasses with a nose and moustache attached.

The term TCP used for disguise was encryption.

e. How did TCP help Kunal get back home?

TCP opened a big book with ‘DNS’, which contains IP address of every website on the Internet. She found the IP address of Kunal's mother's computer and the hosted website ‘KunalBabyPicture.com. Then, it encrypted Kunal, as he was a sensitive data, and sent him back home.

A11 Answers will vary. Sample answer is provided for your reference.

a. How do you think Kunal felt after he suddenly got sucked into the Internet?

b. Now use the five words you have written in the previous exercise to write a paragraph describing Kunal’s state of mind when he suddenly got sucked into the Internet.

He was lost in the world of Internet and wanted to know where he was. He was scared and wanted to get out of that place. He felt homesick. When TCP aunty told him the ways in which she can send him back home, Kunal got a little nervous. In the end, he was surprised to see how TCP aunty disguised him with a nose, a hat and a moustache and sent him back home.

c. The setting of this story is in a fantastical place – find instances from the story to show that the place Kunal visited was fantastical.

Kunal saw all around him, trains whooshed in and out. He was speaking to TCP aunty. TCP was talking to Kunal's mother. TCP was planning to send Kunal back home by using circuit switching method. She encrypted Kunal. These never took place in real life and were a few instances that show that the place Kunal visited was fantastical.

d. What are the instances in the story that make it a humorous one? What role do you think humour plays in this story? Do you think humour makes Kunal’s situation seem less dangerous that it would seem in real life?

TCP explained to Kunal the ways he can reach his home. She planned circuit switching method. For his safety she disguised Kunal with cap, silly glasses with a nose and moustache. This made the story humorous, interesting and informative.

Humour made the story interesting. Perhaps it made Kunal's situation seem less dangerous than it would seem in real life.
