THE UNKNOWN

THE UNKNOWN

WIND ON THE HILL (Alan Alexander Milne)

C.2 From the text.

How other than the one mentioned in the poem, can you tell which way the wind is blowing?

We can tell the way towards which the wind is blowing by feeling it against our skin. Our skin is sensitive to the wind and can feel its directions easily.

C.3 Complete the table

C.6 Answer the following questions

a. Describe how the speaker planned to find out which way the wind was blowing.

Almost everything in our surroundings, like trees and grass, react to the blowing wind. The speaker planned to find out the direction of the wind by letting his kite lose. As the wind takes along the lighter objects, the kite blows with the wind, and the speaker can find its direction.

b. It’s flying from somewhere. As fast as it can… What does the word ‘it’ refer to? Does the speaker know where it is flying from? Quote lines from the poem to support your answer.

The word ‘it’ refers to the wind.

The speaker doesn’t know where it comes from. According to his statement we find in the poem…

“But where the wind comes from

Nobody knows.”

c. Elaborate, using instances from the poem, how the speaker finds the direction of the wind.

The speaker finds the direction of the wind with the help of a kite. Since a flying kite depends upon the wind speed, the speaker thought of letting his kite lose so that it can blow away with the wind. Then, when the speaker finds the kits, he can figure the direction of the wind.

d. Do you agree that nobody knows where the wind comes from? Think and say how the wind impacts your everyday life.

No, I do not agree with the statement, ‘Noone knows, where the wind comes from.’ Modern science can explain all about wind as to why it happens and the source of wind.

Wind is essential in our lives. It controls and balances temperature in nature. It also blows away fog and pollution and we are able to breath easily.

C.7 Answer the following questions

a. No one can tell me,

Nobody knows,

Where the wind comes from,

Where the wind goes.

i. Do you agree with the speakers claim that there is no way to tell which way the wind is blowing to of from?

No, I do not agree with the speaker’s claim that there is no way to tell which way the wind is blowing to or from.

ii. Do you think the speaker uses these lines not to say things which are scientifically correct, but to paint a picture about how a child thinks? Discuss

Modern science has developed a lot and latest tools and technology like weathervane and anemometer, with which we can know the precise and exact direction of the wind, their origin and how it changes.

iii. Take into account the fact that the poet A A Milne was best-known for writing books for children.

The poem actually reflects a child’s imagination of wind. Flying a kite is favourite among children. Wind is necessary if fly a kite. Hence, even though wind cannot be seen, it helps in flying a kite that goes with its direction.
