The
narrator sees boys and girls from the surrounding villages and outskirts of the hill stations. They are all going to their school.
2. What do you know about Ranbir? What kind of life does he
lead?
Ranbir is a ten year old a cheerful boy. He is from a humble family. He crosses mountain and covers four miles distance to reach school; but he never misses a day to school. He is very sincere and buys his book and other things with the money the author pays him for the cucumbers. He has a dream of buying a plane and going around the world.
3. In what ways are the lives of these children better than
those of their parents?
These
children are not as poor as their parents had been and can go to school. Not
many of their parents managed to go to schools as they spent time working in
the fields or delivering milk in the hill station.

5. Is the situation of girls with regard to education the same as that of boys? Give reasons for your answer.
Although
the situation has improved a lot, yet we find in some places and situation the
preference to the boys’ education is much prioritized than that of girls. The
most common reason for this could be as the girls grow up, they are married to
someone they think as outsiders.

D. THINK AND ANSWER: (PAGE: 15)
1. Why are many children unable to attend school even today?
They are
unable to attend school even today, because they help out with the family's
source of livelihood and most of the children live in very poor condition.
2. Hardship makes us brothers of us all. Explain this statement.
The
majority of the students attend schools run by state or the municipality and
they face lot of problems. But these hardships taught them one thing; that they
must live and grow together through the struggle. So, they do not complain but
help each other to better adjust and live peacefully. This makes them brothers
of all.
3. Does the narrator believe that the school going children have
a bright future? Say why.
When we
read this book, it only presents the situation of the school going children in
India. In several places the narrator speaks about the hardship and struggles
they face and yet they many go to school. He also speaks about the growth of a
prosperous middle class which leads to an ever-increasing demand of quality
education. But, 'does education ensures a better future', Ruskin Bond does not
speak anything about it. He watches from his window, boys and girls, big and
small, scruffy, smart, mischievous, and serious are all going somewhere.
Therefore, we may conclude that, he takes going to school is a journey,
hopefully towards a better future.
