The narrator sees boys and girls from the surrounding villages and outskirts of the hill stations. They are all going to their school.

Ranbir is a ten year old a cheerful boy.  He is from a humble family. He crosses mountain and covers four miles distance to reach school; but he never misses a day to school. He is very sincere and buys his book and other things with the money the author pays him for the cucumbers. He has a dream of buying a plane and going around the world.

3. In what ways are the lives of these children better than those of their parents?

These children are not as poor as their parents had been and can go to school. Not many of their parents managed to go to schools as they spent time working in the fields or delivering milk in the hill station.

4. What was the earlier status of girls with regard to education and what is the status now?

Earlier very few girls in India went to school. They were helping in the home until they were old enough to be married. But now just as many girls as there are boys going to school. 

5. Is the situation of girls with regard to education the same as that of boys? Give reasons for your answer.

Although the situation has improved a lot, yet we find in some places and situation the preference to the boys’ education is much prioritized than that of girls. The most common reason for this could be as the girls grow up, they are married to someone they think as outsiders.

1. Why are many children unable to attend school even today?

They are unable to attend school even today, because they help out with the family's source of livelihood and most of the children live in very poor condition.

2. Hardship makes us brothers of us all. Explain this statement.

The majority of the students attend schools run by state or the municipality and they face lot of problems. But these hardships taught them one thing; that they must live and grow together through the struggle. So, they do not complain but help each other to better adjust and live peacefully. This makes them brothers of all.

3. Does the narrator believe that the school going children have a bright future? Say why.

When we read this book, it only presents the situation of the school going children in India. In several places the narrator speaks about the hardship and struggles they face and yet they many go to school. He also speaks about the growth of a prosperous middle class which leads to an ever-increasing demand of quality education. But, 'does education ensures a better future', Ruskin Bond does not speak anything about it. He watches from his window, boys and girls, big and small, scruffy, smart, mischievous, and serious are all going somewhere. Therefore, we may conclude that, he takes going to school is a journey, hopefully towards a better future.
