The elephant is in the captivity of human being, and doing all kinds of laborious work.

It wants to go back-to-back to the forest to be with its loved ones, playmates and its own kind.

It wants to remember its old strength, which it had in the forest. Now that it does not get food properly, it is becoming weaker. Forest affairs refers to animals' habitual activities in the forest like moving freely, playing with its own like etc.

3.    Out to the winds' untainted kiss, the waters' clean caress. Explain the meaning of this line.

Untainted kiss refers to being in the open place continuous flow and touch of the wind will give it a feel of a gentle kiss. Likewise, as the water touches the elephant, it can feel its stroke of gentleness.

4.     What has the elephant been doing for its human masters?

The elephant is selling its back to man and helping his master to earn money.

B.   THINK AND ANSWER

1.     In your opinion, how does this elephant feel about its master?

The elephant is definitely not happy with its human master. Its master ties it with rope and chain with the picket-stake and forces it to work to earn his living. Therefore, it wants to get its own freedom and go back to its old community in the forest.

2.    What does the elephant feel about its earlier days in the jangle? What would it remember the most?

It is missing its earlier days in the jangle, where it can go out with its own kind, wood-folk and lairs. The days in the jangle reminds it about its lost loved one, its playmates without anyone as its master.

C.   DISCUSS IN CLASS.

Where do you think animals are happier - in the jungles where they may or may not get food or in zoos where they are looked after and given enough food?

Animals are definitely happier in the jungles. It is home for them. In the jungle they can be with their own kinds. None of us would like to be in the cage, even though we are taken care of. Freedom is something that makes any life meaningful and worthy or living.
