B. ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS
1. Why did the narrator and her brother keep
looking at their parents?
Ans. The
narrator and her brother were unaware about the American table manners. So they sat on a
sofa and kept looking at their parents for a clue as to what to do next.
2. Why was there dead silence in the room?
Ans. There
was dead silence in the room because everyone in the room were staring at
the author and her family as they were busy pulling the strings of their celery
stuck in the teeth.
3. Why was the narrator horrified by Mr. Gleason?
Ans. The narrator was horrified by Mr. Gleason because, he was chasing a pea around his plate. He was trying to pick it up with his chopsticks but the pea rolled back toward the centre of the plate.
C. NOT REQUIRED TO DO IN CW
D. THINK AND ANSWER
1. The narrator has related a story of clashing dining cultures. What method does she employ to do this? Has she been successful?
Ans. The narrator compares the dining culture of China with the dining culture of America. In this way she presents the differences of two traditions and dining cultures. Yes, she has been successful. She is able to present the odd moments it can create by not knowing the culture of another.
2. In spite of the cultural differences, the two girls remain good friends. Why do you think this is so?
Ans. The families of the two girls were highly concerned about each other. In the same way the narrator's friend, Meg ignored all the silly manners and appreciated the narrator for coming for the party. They never limited themselves in their own culture. They were not superstitious but open minded.
3. "Do
you always slurp when you eat a milkshake?" I asked, before I could stop
myself. Why do you think the narrator uses the expression 'eat a milkshake'
instead of using 'drink a milkshake'?
Ans. The narrator is a Chinese, who has recently migrated to USA with her family. She obviously did not know much about American culture. And here once again she finds another difference needs acceptance while having milkshake.
E. DISCUSS IN CLASS.
Qus. What do you think would have happened if the two girls had made fun of each other's families after these get-together? What is the lesson in this for all of us?
Ans. If the two girls had made fun of each other's families after the get together, I am sure their friendship would have broken and it would hurt them a lot. Not knowing the culture and manner of other culture is not anything doing wrong. It can happen with anyone of us. But the ability to accept the changes and difference of other culture is praiseworthy. It units and binds us together and removes all our misunderstanding.
